Gimme 5: Richards Baseball Coach Reflects on a Successful Season

Brian Wujcik has been at the helm for 19 years with the Bulldogs. He reflects on the past season and talks about his favorite parts of coaching in a hometown setting.

Richards baseball coach Brian Wujcik’s original plan out of college wasn’t to coach baseball. In fact, it was to make movies.

However, after returning home to Richards High School from the University of Iowa with a degree in TV and Film Production, he started working as an assistant coach for the Richards baseball team.

“I loved it,” Wujcik said. “I loved teaching the game and working with the kids and everything.”

He became the head coach in 1992 and has been with the Bulldogs ever since in a leading role.

“I really like to teach the game,” Wujcik said. “I tell the guys, ‘Everyday, I want you to be a smarter ballplayer at the end of practice than you were at the beginning. Just learn one thing.’ ”

This past season, the Bulldogs finished 20-14. They lost to Reavis in the Shepard Regional semifinals. However, the team did win the South Suburban Conference Red Division, and the future is bright for next year with 13 juniors returning.
