OAK LAWN, IL — The members of Johnson-Phelps VFW Post 5220 weren’t going to let Memorial Day slip by without acknowledging the 54 Oak Lawn residents who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country fighting in the Civil War, World War II, Korea and Vietnam.

In a quiet, virtual ceremony reminiscent of the early days of live television, face mask-clad veterans kept a distance from each other paid their respects to the names engraved in the panels of Oak Lawn’s Veterans Memorial. One veteran watched the ceremony from inside his car.

Under normal circumstances, the solemn remembrance ceremony has attracted hundreds and usually included a visit from a congressman and other luminaries.
