iFest Unites OLHMS Community Through Culture and Tradition

7th Annual iFest Celebrates Diversity, Encourages Acceptance at OLHMS with Performances, Presentations, and More

On April 6, 2023, the 7th annual International Fest (iFest) at Oak Lawn-Hometown Middle School successfully wrapped up, fostering a supportive environment that embraces diversity in alignment with School District 123's mission. Spanish teacher Ms. Nuhie Faheem, who organizes the event, said,

"Our goal is to educate staff and students about different cultures and traditions around the world, contributing positively to our community and Mustang society."

The week-long celebration culminated in a day filled with cultural activities, including a flag ceremony, traditional games, cultural films, and discussions on overcoming stereotypes. Students also explored various country presentations and witnessed captivating performances by their peers and local groups, showcasing traditional dances and a cultural fashion show.

Ms. Sweis, who introduced the fashion show participants, expressed her pride in the students, saying,

"Their confidence in sharing their culture with their peers is truly inspiring.

Participants also included Richards High School students who performed a self-choreographed routine and ballet dance.

Mustangs who showcased their talents and cultures were applauded for their bravery and contributions to fostering a sense of unity at OLHMS.

"We are grateful to the entertainers from the community who shared their talents and cultures with us as well. Bravo, Mustangs!"

said Ms. Faheem.

As iFest came to a close, the OLHMS school community was left with a deeper understanding and appreciation of the diverse cultures that make up their school. The event served as a powerful reminder of the beauty that can be found in embracing differences and working together to create a more inclusive environment. Organizers and participants alike are looking forward to continuing the tradition of iFest, ensuring that cultural acceptance and unity remain at the heart of OLHMS for years to come.
