Lipinski Isn't Giving Up Hope In Tight IL-03 Race Against Newman

ILLINOIS 3rd DISTRICT— With 90 percent of IL-03’s 500 precincts counted, return challenger Marie Newman leads long-time incumbent Dan Lipinski by 3,423 votes.

As far as Dan Lipinski is concerned, the fat lady isn’t singing yet. His campaign spokesman Sally Daly told WGN that the IL-03 race — the tightest of the evening — is still to close to call. The longtime incumbent congressman isn’t losing hope. Lipinski is counting on the absentee votes from Chicago precincts.

Newman switched to a “virtual” campaign as coronavirus became more widespread in Illinois. Her campaign team logged over 125,000 phone calls and texts to voters. Two progressive groups have emailed Patch congratulating Newman on her primary win, but it ain't over yet. Here are the unofficial totals.

Marie Newman - 39,436 (48.3%)

Dan Lipinski - 36,013 (44%)

Rush Darwish - 5,066 (6.4%)

Charles Hughes - 1,735 (2.2%)

WGN has declared Will County Commissioner Mike Fricilone as the winner of the IL-03 Republican primary.

Mike Fricilone - 8,629 (58.8%)

Catherine O'Shea - 4,562 (31.1%)

Art Jones - 1,318 (10.1 %)
