OAK LAWN, IL — Mt. Zion Lutheran Church marked a momentous milestone on Sunday, Nov. 10, celebrating its 110th anniversary, with a special service that honored veterans and reflected on the rich history of the church and the Oak Lawn community. The event, which was made possible through the collaboration of local organizations including New Generation Church, Boy Scout Troop 596, and dedicated Mt. Zion members, was a heartfelt tribute to the church’s long-standing role in the village.

The anniversary service included a moving veterans' recognition, paying tribute to those who have served in the armed forces. Members of the congregation, along with members of other groups, gathered in unity, sharing stories of service and sacrifice. Following the service, attendees enjoyed a catered luncheon.

Darlene Agner, a long-time member of Mt. Zion at 104th Street and Kostner Avenue, presented a captivating history lesson, recounting the church’s journey over the past 110 years. Her storytelling offered a glimpse into the church's humble beginnings and its growth into a cornerstone of faith and community.

"It was an honor for Troop 596 to participate in Mt. Zion Church’s 110th Anniversary celebration,” Troop 596 Scoutmaster John Paul said. “We have a long history with Mt. Zion going back to the 1960’s. We often meet men in the community and while camping around the Midwest, who were Troop 596 Scouts, right here at Mt. Zion. The church elders and clergy shared a lot of kind words about our Scouts, which illustrated the direct effect their service activities have on others in our community."
