“We have a fundamental obligation to ensure our next generation has the foundation and innovative skills they need to secure the good-paying jobs of tomorrow,” said U.S. Rep. Marie Newman in a news release, one of several house members supporting the challenge in their districts.
“That’s why I’m thrilled to participate in this year’s Congressional App Challenge, a critical program designed to provide students in Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District with an opportunity to develop tech and coding skills in a fun, accessible competition," Newman continued. The Challenge’s submission portal is now open. The competition is open to all students who meet the eligibility requirements, regardless of coding experience. Students can enter the app challenge individually or team up. Students can register and submit their applications until Nov. 1.
Winners will be selected by panels of judges drawn from their own local community. The winning apps are eligible to be featured on display in the U.S. Capitol building, on house.gov and on the Congressional App Challenge website.
Recognizing disparities in race and gender in the tech sector, the CAC also focuses on inclusivity and making the Challenge as accessible as possible to people from all backgrounds. Deliberate efforts will be made to include students from all backgrounds, including those traditionally underrepresented in tech.
