A 40-year-old, non-compliant, registered sex offender turned up in the Oak Lawn Public Library after he called police because he was feeling suicidal, reports said.
Oak Lawn police met a man later identified as Marvin Lee Janas, 40, at the library at 9427 S. Raymond Ave. around 5:13 p.m. May 8. Janas allegedly told officers he wanted to go to Advocate Christ Medical Center for a psychiatric evaluation because he wanted to kill himself.

When police ran his name through the Law Enforcement Agencies Data System, they learned that Janas was a convicted child sex offender, who was last searched by the U.S. Marshal’s Office.
While Janas was being evaluated at Christ Medical Center, police discovered that Janas was required to register as a sex offender with Illinois State Police every 90 days, but had failed to do so, reports said.

According to the police report, Janas had been arrested in June 2012 and was sentenced to three years for failing to keep accurate records. He failed to register again as required by law when he was released from the Illinois Department of Corrections in October 2014.
Officers returned to the hospital to speak with Janas. Janas allegedly explained he had registered with Chicago police the week before, but could not say on which day. He also provided a state ID with a Chicago address, reports said.
Asked if that was his current address, Janas admitted it was not, police said.
Eventually, police said that Janas admitted that he never changed his address because he “did not have money.”
Janas was taken into custody. The Cook County State’s Attorney’s office approved felony charges for failure to register as a sex offender.
According to the Illinois Sex Offender Registry, Janas was convicted of criminal sexual abuse and twice failing to register as a sex offender. Janas was 33 at the time of his offense, and his victim 13.
He is currently being held on in lieu of $15,000 bond at Cook County Jail. His next court date is June 3 at Bridgeview.
