Oak Lawn 2017 Mayoral Race By the Numbers
A precinct-by-precinct breakdown of votes cast in the 2017 Oak Lawn mayoral election.

OAK LAWN, IL -- On a night when 20 suburban incumbent mayors lost their seats, Sandra Bury won her second term as Oak Lawn’s village president by a comfortable margin against a tough opponent known for aggressive campaign style. Similar suburban mayors also faced a new era of double-fisted campaigning, which led to their demise.
Overall, voter turnout in suburban Cook County for the 2017 general consolidated election was 17 percent, down two points from 2013. Out of Cook County’s 1,524,858 registered voters, 267,795 cast ballots in Tuesday’s election, according to the Cook County Clerk.
The village’s mayor, clerk and trustee seats in even-numbered districts -- 2, 4 and 6 -- were up for renewal this election cycle. Oak Lawn’s overall turnout dipped from 30 percent in 2013 to 24.07 percent in 2017.

In a district-by-district breakdown, Bury captured seven of Dist. 1’s eight precincts, where Tim Desmond is the current sitting trustee. She lost by two votes to Streit in former trustee Jerry Hurkes’ 21st home precinct.
Bury swept in her home district -- Dist. 2 -- where she resides. Tr. Alex Olejniczak also powered his way to a fourth term. Olejniczak swept the district from challenger Glenn Schussler winning a commanding 71 percent of the vote.
Streit dominated his home turf where he has represented the third district on the village board since 1991. Streit won seven out of eight precincts in Dist. 3.
Bury also swept Dist. 4’s seven precincts, where incumbent trustee Terry Vorderer won his second term on the village board. Vorderer captured all precincts, garnering 65 percent of the vote over challenger John Koss.
In Dist. 5, where Tr. Bud Stalker is the current sitting trustee, Bury won six of the district’s nine precincts. Dist. 5 also has three split precincts -- 85 and 35 that share boundaries with Dist. 3, and 100 that crosses over into Dist. 6
Over in Dist. 6, where Tom Phelan was battling Jozettemarie Palermo for his old seat on the village board, Bury took seven of the district’s eight precincts. Palermo was the only trustee candidate on the Streit ticket to capture a precinct, taking the split 100th precinct (Dist. 5 and Dist. 6) away from Phelan.
