The event brought together lodge members, community members, veterans, local students, and lodge officers in a moving tribute that blended history, music, and heartfelt expression of national pride.

The ceremony opened with a stirring rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner, sung by Beth Wachowski, setting a reverent tone for the program. Exalted Ruler Lynda Riffice, PER, along with lodge officers, offered a warm welcome and introduced the event. Chaplain Kevin Sullivan followed with an opening prayer, inviting those in attendance to reflect on the sacrifices symbolized by the flag.

Secretary Carol Neth delivered a thoughtful response on behalf of the Lodge, followed by Mearns leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Wachowski’s third performance, America the Beautiful, brought many to their feet in recognition of the beauty and resilience of the nation.

A highlight of the ceremony was the recognition of student winners from the Elks’ Essay Contest, themed “What Does Patriotism Mean to Me?”. Four students received top honors at the state level:

Emma Sanchez, 5th Grade

Annalisa Colorato, 6th Grade

Cameron Dix, 7th Grade

Gianna Colorato, 8th Grade

Their essays reflected deep thought and emotional maturity, showcasing the next generation’s understanding of civic responsibility and love of country.

Exalted Ruler Lynda Riffice then led a moving Recognition of the Branches of Service, honoring members of the Armed Forces, both past and present. The Orland Park American Legion Post #111 conducted the ceremonial folding of the American flag, explaining the meaning behind each of the 13 folds—each one representing principles of liberty, unity, and remembrance.

The ceremony concluded indoors with final words from Riffice, expressing gratitude to all participants and attendees for keeping the spirit of Flag Day alive.

As the program drew to a close, new American flag was presented and raised in a solemn gesture led by Veterans’ Chair Joanne Mearns—a lasting symbol of continued dedication to community and country.
