Oak Lawn Elks Host Heartwarming Event Honoring Veterans

Honoring the Vets from Manteno Veterans Home

Oak Lawn Elks, a community organization dedicated to serving communities, assisting those in need and supporting veterans, hosted a memorable event on Thursday, June 15. The event brought together approximately 30 veterans from the Manteno Veterans Home. The heartwarming occasion, held at the Elks Club located at 107th and Central, was made possible with the support of the American Justice Motorcycle Association (AJMA), who graciously escorted the veterans to the lodge.

The event began with a heroic reception as two busloads of veterans arrived. Eight members of the American Justice Motorcycle Association escorted the veterans from 115th and Cicero, ensuring their safe and comfortable journey to the Elks Club. Upon arrival, Elks members and AJMA volunteers eagerly assisted the veterans off the buses and warmly welcomed them into the lodge.

Inside the Elks Lodge, a delightful afternoon awaited the veterans. The event commenced with a veteran-requested appetizer of White Castles, setting the stage for a delicious lunch that followed. In collaboration with the chef and kitchen staff, the Elks Club thoughtfully prepared a special meal to honor the veterans for their service and sacrifice.

Not only were the veterans treated to a wonderful meal, but they were also given the opportunity to engage in games and activities, fostering camaraderie among themselves and the Elks members. The event provided a platform for these brave individuals to share stories, reminisce about their experiences, and create new connections.

The success of this event was made possible by the dedication and hard work of several individuals and organizations. The Oak Lawn Elks extends their heartfelt gratitude to all their members, with special mentions to Larry Nolan - Leading Knight, Lynda Riffice - Exalted Ruler, Major Dan Johnson - Committee Chair, and Joanne Mearns - an Elks member, for their exceptional efforts in organizing the event.

Mayor Terry Vorderer also deserves recognition for his support and attendance at the event, demonstrating the Oak Lawn community's appreciation for the veterans. Additionally, Brian Guerin, President of the American Justice MA, played a vital role in ensuring the safe escort of the veterans.

The generosity of Mary Cryan from Whatknots, who donated lap quilts for the veterans and Stacey Kolls of the Warbirds who also donated quilts, further added to the warmth and care extended to these heroes. Lastly, the dedicated kitchen staff of the Elks Club worked tirelessly to prepare and serve a memorable meal, making the event a resounding success.

A special recognition goes to Mick from Ward Transport & Logistics, who played a crucial role in making the event even more memorable. Mick brought a semi tractor trailer with a special Salute to Veterans design, which was set up in the Elks parking lot. This visually striking trailer added an extra touch of honor and reverence to the occasion, capturing the attention of both the veterans and the community. The effort and commitment shown by Mick, the Ward Family and Ward Transport & Logistics in providing this unique display deserve sincere appreciation and gratitude for their contribution to the event's success.

The Oak Lawn Elks' event honoring veterans not only provided a memorable day for the veterans from Manteno Veterans Home but also highlighted the unwavering support and gratitude of the community. Such initiatives serve as a reminder that the sacrifices made by our veterans should never be forgotten. As a community, we owe it to these courageous individuals to continue showing our appreciation and support in any way possible.

With a legacy spanning over a century and a half, the Elks organization has consistently demonstrated its motto, "Elks Care Elks Share," encapsulates their ethos of compassion and solidarity. Through events like this, the Oak Lawn Elks Lodge #2254 continues to exemplify the spirit of selflessness and service that has made the organization a pillar of community support.
