OLCHS, Reavis Teachers 3D Print PPE For Frontline Medical Workers

Oak Lawn and Reavis high school teachers join coronavirus fight making face shields for medical workers and first responders.

Although in-school classroom instruction is done for the year, two teachers from Oak Lawn and Reavis high schools have been spending their time making personal protection equipment for frontline medical workers and first responders during the coronavirus crisis.

Oak Lawn Community High School’s Project Lead the Way instructor Dan Kenny has stepped up to join the fight. Kenny has converted part of his home into a 3D printing lab, printing parts for face shields. 3D printing is a process where solid objects are created from digital files by using additive processes by laying down successive layers of material until the object takes shape.

Along with John Jones, a colleague at Reavis High School in Burbank, Kenny is working with the Chicago Women’s Hockey Club, which has started a PPE assist program to support essential workers throughout the south suburbs, including Advocate Christ Medical Center, OSF-Little Company of Mary Medical Center and the Chicago Police Department. OLCHS Dist. 229 has already donated gloves, goggles and cleaning supplies to local agencies. Dist. 299 also donated a large supply of 3D printer filaments to Lemont High School to print its own necessary PPE.
