OAK LAWN, IL — The Oak Lawn Police Department invites new as well as experienced police officers to apply for the full-time position of police patrol officer.

Candidates will be required to successfully complete a written examination and an oral interview to be placed on an eligibility list. To review the police department’s policy regarding lateral transfer candidates, visit our website at www.oaklawn-il.gov.

Starting salary $69,622 the first year with increases to $83,873 after one year to $99,924 after three years, plus benefits.

Summary of Qualifications:

AGE:

At least twenty-one (21) years of age and under thirty-five (35) years of age, as of the closing date of the application filing period. Proof of age will be required at time of application. An exception to the maximum age may apply for veterans who qualify pursuant to 65 ILCS 5/10.1-2-6(a).

HEALTH:

Physically and psychologically qualified to sustain the labors and exposures of a police patrol officer.

VISION:

Minimum of 20/70 uncorrected vision, corrected to 20/20 in each eye, with normal color and depth perception.

CHARACTER:

No convictions of felonies; good moral character.

RESIDENCY:

United States citizen. Employees must establish residency within the State of Illinois and within fifty (50) miles of the Oak Lawn Village Hall, 9446 S. Raymond Ave. within six months of their date of completion of their probationary period.

EDUCATION:

  • Successfully completed at least 60 semester (or 90 quarter) hours of credit from a regionally accredited college or university as of the date of filing the application for employment. Education will be waived for candidates who have four (4) years of active military duty with an Honorable Discharge and/or who meet the Lateral Transfer Candidate Policy.
  • Peace Officer Wellness Evaluation Report (P.O.W.E.R) card issued no more than 6 months prior (Dec. 3, 2021 – June 3, 2022) to the closing date for filing the application.

LANGUAGE:

Speak, read and write the English language proficiently.

DRIVER QUALIFICATIONS:

Possess a valid driver’s license from state of residency.

For Information About Obtaining An Application:

The written examination is tentatively scheduled for mid-July. Applicants will be notified of date, time and location of all exams.

Prior to appointment, eligible candidates must pass a pre-employment background check and medical and psychological exams.

A non-refundable fee of $25 is due at the time of the written exam.
