Senior Mona Walls, a student in Bill Gerny’s AP Literature class, was recognized as a district winner for the Voice of Democracy contest. Bill described Mona as “a fantastic writer with a strong voice and great personality.”

On February 11, 2020, Mona performed her essay for the VFW banquet attendees. This year’s theme was What Makes America Great? An excerpt from Mona’s essay states, “What has started as a land inhabited solely by natives has rapidly evolved into a global powerhouse. Although some elements of America’s evolution are quite egregious, the continuous growth of the nation has yet to cease.” Mona was humble when asked about the experience. She chuckled, “I was a mess, but I came out on top I guess.”
