Oak Lawn Unites for Annual Blue Ribbon Walk Honoring First Responders
Residents come together to show appreciation for Oak Lawn's Police Officers and Firefighters
Oak Lawn proudly hosted the annual Blue Ribbon Walk on Saturday, June 3, to salute the town's first responders. The event, organized by Oak Lawn Raiders, community members and spearheaded by Oak Lawn resident Mike Cerf, aimed to demonstrate heartfelt appreciation and respect for the service and sacrifice of the local police officers and firefighters who put their lives on the line every day.

The event kicked off at approximately 11 a.m., as participants began to gather at the picturesque Lake Shore Park. The sound of music was being heard from the talented Katie Sullivan Band. Excitement and anticipation filled the air as individuals from all walks of life united in a show of solidarity and gratitude. The event garnered overwhelming support from both young and old, highlighting the strong sense of community that characterizes Oak Lawn.
Attendees were honored to hear from esteemed speakers who addressed the crowd, highlighting the significance of the event and expressing gratitude to the first responders. Among the notable speakers were Oak Lawn Mayor Terry Vorderer, Police Chief Daniel Vittorio, a representative from the Oak Lawn Raiders, and the event's chief organizer, Mike Cerf. Their inspiring words resonated with the community, reinforcing the importance of recognizing and appreciating the service and sacrifice of the local heroes.

Additionally, a special moment took place as the VFW Post #5520 Color Guard presented the colors, adding a touch of solemnity and reverence to the event. After the presentation of colors, Katie Sullivan sang the National Anthem and God Bless America.
At noon, the walk commenced, encircling the serene lake. The sight of the procession led by OL Firemen on Engine #3, with participants donning Blue Ribbon T-shirts, Back the Blue hats, and other symbols of support, served as a visual testament to the immense gratitude the community holds for its first responders.

Following the walk, the community gathered behind PD's Place, located at 5407 W. 95th St, where the Oak Lawn Raiders Social Athletic Club fired up the grills. Thanks to the generous contributions of Whittingham Meats in Alsip, S&T Provisions in Chicago, and Jack and Pat's Old Fashioned Butcher Shop in Chicago Ridge, participants were treated to delicious burgers and hot dogs. To quench their thirst, water and chips were also made available, courtesy of the event organizers. The lunch provided the perfect opportunity for community members to further connect and express their gratitude to the first responders in attendance.
With the support of generous sponsors such as the Oak Lawn Raiders Social Athletic Club, Country Financial, PD's Place, B.J. McMahons, Jack & Pat's Old Fashioned Butcher Shop, Whittingham Meats, Jesse's Tavern, Stars & Stripes, Katie Sullivan Band, The Great American Bagel, and S&T Provisions, the Blue Ribbon Walk was a memorable occasion.

By coming together as a community, Oak Lawn showcased its unwavering commitment to standing by those who put their lives on the line to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents.
