OLCHS Rocket League Team Takes Sectional, Blasts Off To IHSA Finals
Oak Lawn Community High School competes in first-ever Esports Sectional including basketball, Super Mario Bros. Smash and Rocket League.
OAK LAWN, IL — The first-ever Esports sectional was held at Richards High School and consisted of students competing in games including Super Smash Bros., Basketball, and Rocket League. ESports, short for electronic sports, turns online gaming into a spectator sport. It mimics the experience of watching a professional sporting event, except instead of watching a physical event, spectators watch video gamers compete against each other.
Oak Lawn Community High School’s Rocket League team of Marcos Nunez, Taleb Mreiziq, and Kalvin Vega won the IHSA sectional in the Rocket League event. Other notable finishers included Brenton Braxton advancing to the quarter-finals in his gaming event. The Esports team is coached by Janet Meyers.
“This is such a great experience for our students,” Meyers said. I am proud of our boys for their dedication and competitive spirit. I am looking forward to watching them compete in the first IHSA state tournament.”
