Technically, ’s first win on its new turf field belonged not to the varisty team but to the sophomores.
The sophomores scored the first Spartan touchdown, the first sack and the first shutout – wining a defensive duel against the Niles North Vikings 6-0.
"It was a typical sophomore game," said Dr. Michael Riordan, the D229 superintendent and school principal.

Riordan explained that the schedule was "weird" this year. The Spartans' first four games are at home, then there are four road games. There is only one home game remaining after that.
One of the new Spartan Boosters, the father of a freshman player who was working the concession stand on Friday night, told me his son was traveling to Niles North the next morning with the freshmen team.

“If they win I’ll call you, if I don’t call it means they lost,” he said.
It’s Saturday night and nobody has called to report the Spartans’ frosh score.
