PBS series features Richards graduate tonight

Ann Curry hosts "We'll Meet Again" profile of David Johnston, who died in the Mt. St. Helens eruption

Ann Curry will host the second episode of the series "We'll Meet Again" at 10 p.m. tonight on WTTW Channel 11 in Chicago.

This episode features the heroic acts of Richards High School graduate David Johnston (Class of 1967), the only US Geological Survey volcanologist killed during the Mt. St. Helens eruption in 1980.

The series examines dramatic events from history via the personal stories of those who experienced them. David warned his colleagues that they should not be on the mountain, telling them “we’re standing right next to a keg of dynamite.”

Despite the risk, he remained on the mountain to complete his work.

David and others convinced the government to close the mountain to the public. Just prior to the eruption, he sent graduate student Mindy Brugman and others to safety.

The episode features an interview with Brugman -- see a great preview at the link.

USGS has named several facilities in David Johnston's honor, and so has the Oak Lawn Park District.
