Remote Learning In CHSD 218 Brings 'Sense of urgency'

Shepard High School teachers' and studens' 'extraordinary efforts greatly appreciated' in making virtual learning work.

PALOS HEIGHTS, IL — Remote learning has changed since second semester last spring. District 218, like all school systems, scrambled as the pandemic surged. We needed to close our buildings and switch to remote learning quickly.

Over the summer, however, district staff prepared along two tracks: The possibility that we would return to in-person instruction and the possibility that we might not.

While everyone wants students to return to school as soon as health authorities recommend, our principals laud what’s happening remotely.

In the days ahead we will share thoughts from Eisenhower, Richards, and Shepard principals Dr. Erik Briseño, Dr. Mike Jacobson, and Dr. Greg Walder. They write eloquently on the service, dedication, creativity, and professionalism with which our teachers approach each day.

In two weeks, here is what we have accomplished. Quite impressive. There is such a sense of urgency surrounding our teachers. This is not what they have been trained to do or signed up for.

They know their responsibility is to educate our students, so they have a future. The challenges that they are facing is not used as an excuse. They are facing these challenges and are not running away from them.

  • Teachers have established two viable instructional platforms for high quality learning for our students.
  • Teachers have become strangely comfortable with the terms synchronous and asynchronous.
  • Teachers are likely a Zoom expert or near expert at this point.
  • Teachers have built relationships with literally hundreds of students, making them feel welcome, reassuring them, and getting them excited to learn.
  • Teachers have connected with colleagues to collaborate and began setting up your PLCs.
  • Teachers have spent countless hours during and outside the workday planning high quality lessons and engaging learning activities because they want the best for our students.

Granted, this is a fraction of what they have done, but these alone are so very impressive. Accomplishments, work ethic, and professionalism like this is why Shepard is such great place for students. All of their extraordinary efforts are duly noted and greatly appreciated.
