Richards announces athletes of the year

Castro, Wetzel, Fetchko, and Gentile also star academically

Richards High School in Oak Lawn recently announced the winners of its four athletes-of-the-year awards. Although not a requirement, each of the winners also owns an impressive academic record.

Female Athlete of the Year
Emily Wetzel
Emily will attend the University of Illinois at Chicago on a softball scholarship. Emily earned All-SSC honors in softball. She also swam for Richards and earned Honors with Distinction for posting a grade point average above 4.0. Emily won a National Scholar Athlete Award from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and helped Richards place in the top 5 in the United States last year in team GPA.

Male Athlete of the Year
Noel Castro
Noel competed for Richards in both soccer and baseball, in which he earned All-South Suburban Conference honors. Noel, who has not decided on a college, also qualified for Honor Roll.

Matt Gavin Award
Kaitlyn Fetchko
Kaitlyn competed for Richards in volleyball and softball. She plans to become a pharmacist. Kaitlyn excelled in the classroom, too, earning Honors with Distinction for posting a grade point average of 4.0 or higher. Kaitlyn won a National Scholar Athlete Award from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and helped Richards place in the top 5 in the United States last year in team GPA.

Bobby Bolton Award
Abby Gentile
Abby competed in softball for Richards and earned an athletic scholarship to North Park University. She also excelled academically, earning Honors with Distinction for posting a grade point average of 4.0 or higher. Abby won a National Scholar Athlete Award from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and helped Richards place in the top 5 in the United States last year in team GPA.
