Richards graduates set sights on Guinness world record

Runners from Richards, Shepard, MVCC, Trinity to attempt 100/10K relay record starting at 4 p.m. Thursday

Shepard High School will serve as the host site for a collaboration featuring track and cross country athletes from Shepard and Richards high schools and Trinity Christian College and Moraine Valley Community College.

Starting at 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 25, the 100 runners will each run a 10K on the Shepard track. That’s about 625 miles.

The event also served as a fund raiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

If they finish -- and they’re confident -- by noon on Sunday they will set a Guinness world record while raising money for a wonderful cause.

A pair of Richards graduates developed the idea. Dmitri Dimizas, who coaches track at both Richards and MVCC, worked with Joe Lerner, who works and coaches at Shepard and graduated from Trinity, in developing the idea.

“The spread sheet (at the link) shows our roster and projected start times of each individual, so come on out and cheer on some of your favorites. I’ll be out there all three days along with many others, and we could use as much support/encouragement as we could get,” Lerner said.
