Richards, Oak Lawn in Heated Boys Volleyball Conference Race

The Bulldogs and Spartans seem to be peaking as the drive for South Suburban Conference supremacy intensifies.

The South Suburban Conference race in boys volleyball is heating up, with Oak Lawn and Richards right in the thick of it.

Richards is 12-5 overall and 8-1 in conference, while Oak Lawn is 9-8 overall and 7-2 in conference heading into a weekend tournament.

Before Richards’ match at Lemont on Thursday, Bulldogs coach Troy Grevengoed praised his team’s unity.

“Right now our biggest strength is that we are playing as one unit,” Grevengoed said in an email. “All of the guys are fully invested in what we are trying to teach, and getting better match after match.”

Richards defeated Lemont 25-15, 25-11 on Thursday as junior outside hitter Jeremy Norton led the Bulldogs with nine kills and seven aces, while senior Ryan Sautkus had 13 digs and three aces, and sophomore outside hitter Nick Costa added seven kills.

“Lemont played us tough the first round in conference, so this time we really wanted to step up our game,” Grevengoed said of a 25-19, 25-23 victory over Lemont in March. “They have a few guys that can really hit, so it as was a chance for us to work on a strong double block.”

At 7-2 in conference, Oak Lawn is right on the heels of the Bulldogs. The Spartans won both of their conference matches this week.

On Tuesday, Oak Lawn defeated Reavis  25-19, 19-25, 25-21. Senior outside hitter Patrick McGuinness had 17 kills, while junior setter Ali Sheikh had 33 assists.

Oak Lawn defeated Eisenhower 23-25, 25-16, 25-17 on Wednesday. McGuinness had 13 kills in the win, while sophomore Marc Hansen had 11 kills.

Richards Baseball on a Roll

Richards’ baseball team defeated Argo 7-6 on Wednesday and routed Hillcrest 11-1 on Thursday. Lou Castro and Chris Elliott each drove in three runs in Thursday’s game, as the Bulldogs improved to 11-4 overall and 6-1 in conference play.
