CHICAGO, IL – Marist High School welcomed 421 freshmen to the school’s orientation day on Wednesday, August 22. The students represent 40 cities or towns, 58 zip codes, and 110 grammar schools.
Principal Larry Tucker ’79, academic deans Joe Inzinga ’77 and Tom Gouterman, and admissions recruiter Pat Hogan ’05, along with a group of student ambassadors, greeted the students as they arrived to campus for freshman orientation on Aug. 22. The students assembled in the main gym where President Br. Hank Hammer, FMS, welcomed them, explaining that Marist is now their second home.
Tucker followed by pointing out that high school is a fresh start and an opportunity to make a positive first impression.

On the eve of orientation, freshman parents and students attended a welcome event at the school. Parents met in the gym and cafeteria to get an overview of many topics of interest for new parents, including schedules, uniforms, athletics, activities, and more. Meanwhile, out in Marist’s Red & White Stadium, the freshmen participated in games and activities to get to know one another and learn the Marist fight song. Earlier in August, freshmen attended Marist 101 sessions to become familiar with their iPads, school technology, useful apps, and more.
All grades started school August 23. During the first full week of school, each grade level had an assembly to address important events and topics that are pertinent to that year level.
Faculty and staff members also gathered in advance of the school year. They competed in a friendly scavenger throughout the neighborhood, celebrated Mass together with celebrant Fr. Tom Hurley ’85 and attended meetings.
