Christmas Without Cancer Queen of Hearts Drawing Tonight

The St. James Place army of runners who contributed mightily to Christmas Without Cancer's highly successful 5K last month has caught its collective breath and stands ready to host tonight's Queen of Hearts drawing with a $39,000 total.

"St James Place has become our home away from home," said Gerri Neylon, CWC founder. "Everyone is so friendly here and sincerely interested in helping local families."

It could be you Thursday at St. James Place, 5305 West 95th Street in Oak Lawn, with a Queen of Hearts total of more than $39,000, half of which will raise funds for Christmas Without Cancer and the other half prize money for the lucky card holder.

"St. James not only showed up to run, they brought sponsors with them," said Gerri Neylon. "The fine people of St. James and their patrons know we can always help people locally with money to pay bills, medicines or parking at hospitals. The need is great all year."

Like the happy totals, the crowds have grown in recent weeks as the long-time Oak Lawn establishment hosts local walk-ups, regulars, playoff baseball fans and newfound friends."

Last month marked the Fifth Annual Christmas Without Cancer 5K Run/Walk in Honor of Matt Hooker to raise funds and begin the season of giving period.

Race organizers hosted more than 1,000 participants directly from Oak Lawn, Evergreen Park, and the greater Beverly/Mount Greenwood/Morgan Park communities.

Oak Lawn resident Anna Distel, a cancer survivor, watched the 5K from the curb as her son Edward top the field of runners in 18:42. In training for the New York Marathon, the Marist High School graduate dressed in his best elf outfit led start to finish and still looked fresh enough to run back to New York.
