OAK LAWN, IL — There is still time left to apply to become an Oak Lawn police officer. New and experienced police officers are invited to apply for full-time police patrol officers. The deadline for applying is 4 p.m. Friday, June 3.

The Oak Lawn Police Department has several vacancies and is building an eligibility list. Experienced police officers with two or more years of experience interested in making a lateral transfer are especially encouraged to apply. The POWER card will be waived for lateral transfer officers.

Candidates will be required to successfully complete a written examination and an oral interview to be placed on an eligibility list. To review the police department’s policy regarding lateral transfer candidates, visit the OLPD website.

Starting salary $69,622 the first year with increases to $83,873 after one year to $99,924 after three years, plus benefits. The Oak Lawn Police Department offers many opportunities that other suburban departments don’t, such as SWAT, K9, DEA, task force officers, accident reconstruction and evidence technicians.

Summary of Qualifications:

AGE: At least twenty-one (21) years of age and under thirty-five (35) years of age, as of the closing date of the application filing period. Proof of age will be required at time of application. An exception to the maximum age may apply for veterans who qualify pursuant to 65 ILCS 5/10.1-2-6(a).
HEALTH: Physically and psychologically qualified to sustain the labors and exposures of a police patrol officer.
VISION: Minimum of 20/70 uncorrected vision, corrected to 20/20 in each eye, with normal color and depth perception.

CHARACTER: No convictions of felonies; good moral character.

RESIDENCY: United States citizen. Employees must establish residency within the State of Illinois and within fifty (50) miles of the Oak Lawn Village Hall, 9446 S. Raymond Ave. within six months of their date of completion of their probationary period.

EDUCATION:

  • Successfully completed at least 60 semester (or 90 quarter) hours of credit from a regionally accredited college or university as of the date of filing the application for employment. Education will be waived for candidates who have four (4) years of active military duty with an Honorable Discharge and/or who meet the Lateral Transfer Candidate Policy.
  • Peace Officer Wellness Evaluation Report (P.O.W.E.R) card issued no more than 6 months prior (12/3/21 – 6/3/22) to the closing date for filing the application.

LANGUAGE: Speak, read and write the English language proficiently.

DRIVER QUALIFICATIONS: Possess a valid driver’s license from state of residency.

For Information About Obtaining An Application:
The written examination is tentatively scheduled for mid-July. Applicants will be notified of date, time and location of all exams. Prior to appointment, eligible candidates must pass a pre-employment background check and medical and psychological exams. A non-refundable fee of $25 is due at the time of the written exam.
