EMT-Basics, sometimes referred to as EMT-1s, are entry-level, pre-hospital care providers. These entry-level emergency medical technicians assist in administering medicine already prescribed to the patient and other basic emergency procedures such as performing CPR and automated external defibrillation, controlling bleeding and administering supplemental oxygen.

EMT-Basics receive about 110 hours of training and can work their way up to EMT-Intermediate (400-500 hours of training), or paramedics that perform a wide range of emergency medical procedures after two years of training.
