“None of the injuries appear to be self-inflicted," Oak Park Police Chief LaDon Reynolds said in a video statement posted to YouTube.
The West Suburban Major Crimes Task Force, which is made up of several police departments, has been brought into the investigation, according to the police department.
According to Reynolds, his department has no reason to believe that the death investigation poses any risk to the neighborhood. However, as an added precaution, the department has increased patrols and police visibility in the area.
"On behalf of the Oak Park Police Department, I want to offer our condolences to the families and friends of the two victims, both of whom are known in the community and beyond," Reynolds said.
Johnson, who founded his law firm years ago, played a pivotal role in the development of affordable housing in Chicago and in securing justice for coal miners, truck drivers and others in the labor movement, according to his website. He has also served as a special commissioner for the U.S. District Court in Chicago and a Hearing Officer for the Chicago Police Board, the Illinois State Police Merit Board and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity for many years.
Last year, he oversaw the hearings for four officers accused of covering up the investigation into the 2014 Laquan McDonald shooting, according to the Chicago Tribune. He also presided over the hearing of an officer who shot and killed 55-year-old Bettie Jones and 19-year-old Quintonio LeGrier during a confrontation with LeGrier in 2016.
Johnson's wife specialized in federal litigation, real estate and corporate transactions and zoning. She was formerly a clinic fellow at Northwestern Law School, teaching trial practice and ethics and general counsel to a large real estate development and management firm.
