OAK PARK, IL — Police in Oak Park intervened when a group of Neo-Nazis started to hang a sign over an overpass above I-290 Sunday morning. The sign, emblazoned with red letters and images of skulls and crossbones, read "DANGER: Sanctuary City Ahead."
Five men were involved in the incident, according to CBS Chicago.
Some of the Neo-Nazis shielded their faces when police arrived, CBS Chicago reports.
The men are allegedly part of Identity Evropa, according to a Tweet. Identity Evropa is classified by the Anti-Defamation League as a" white supremacist group that is focused on the preservation of “white American identity” and promoting white European culture."
One of the group's rallying calls is "You will not replace us," and believe that "America was founded by white people for white people and was not founded to be a multiracial or multicultural society," according to the Anti-Defamation League.
Oak Park passed a welcoming ordinance in February 2017 that "welcomes diversity and believes that all individuals living in or visiting the village should be treated fairly and with respect and dignity."
