10 Steps to Help Prevent Macular Degeneration

Important Steps to Help Prevent Macular Degeneration

A very common and serious eye condition that affects the older population is Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD).  Macular Degeneration affects the macula, the part of the retina responsible for our central vision.  Depending on the stage of the condition, people may experience little to no symptoms or may lose vision resulting in blindness.  The good news is that there are steps you can take to help lower your risk of developing ARMD:

1. Don’t Smoke.

2. Eat plenty of leafy, green vegetables such as spinach and kale.  These vegetables have high amounts of the antioxidant, Lutein, which studies show decreases the risk of ARMD.

3. Take a daily multivitamin.

4.  If you are in the early stages of ARMD or have a strong family history, consider taking an eye health supplement/vitamin.  Some examples are Preservision by Bausch and Lomb, and I-Caps by Alcon.

5.  Wear sunglasses with 100% UV protection.

6. Exercise regularly.

7. Consider taking an omega-3 supplement.

8. Keep your blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol under control.

9. Find out if any family members have ARMD.

10.  Get an annual comprehensive eye examination.  This may be one of the most important, yet overlooked ways you can ensure that your eyes stay healthy.  Receiving regular eye examinations will allow your eye doctor to detect if you have any eye disease before symptoms  develop.

*Make sure that you speak with your doctor before starting any vitamin or medical treatment.
