Oak Park Resident To Be Honored By Voices Against Brain Cancer

Oak Park resident Dr. William Barrows will receive a Courage Award from Voices Against Brain Cancer in honor of his valiant fight against brian cancer.

Voices Against Brain Cancer will host the first annual “Join the Voices! Chicago Run/Walk” on Sunday, May 5, 2013 in Lincoln Park, Chicago at 8 a.m. The charitable event will feature a 5K run, a scenic walk, kids races and a fun family festival. Funds raised will go towards the advancement of brain cancer research, as a testament of hope for the people in the world who are diagnosed with brain tumors. Local patients, doctors and caregivers will be honored for their valiant fights against brain cancer.

This year’s honorees have been chosen for their continued efforts to help raise brain cancer and brain tumor awareness - among them is Oak Park resident Dr. William Barrows. He and his wife Donna are long standing members of the suburban Illinois community. They have three adult sons. Now at age 59, Bill has practiced pediatrics in Chicago for 30 years.

Bill was diagnosed with brain cancer in August, 2011.  Since then, he has been
treated with radiation therapy and chemotherapy, and in February, 2013 he underwent neurosurgery.  Currently, he is being treated with a chemotherapy regimen under investigation by Dr. Robert Aiken at Rush University Medical Center, who will also be honored during this Sunday’s event.

Voices Against Brain Cancer was founded in loving memory of Gary Lichtenstein, a
former Chicago resident, who lost his valiant battle with brain cancer on
October 1, 2003. Since then, the organization has garnered support from other
brain cancer patients, brain cancer survivors, their families, caregivers,
prestigious doctors and celebrities.

Throughout his battle with brain cancer, Bill has remained positive. He is active in supporting Voices Against Brian Cancer’s initiatives and continues to work hard to raise funds and awareness for brain cancer and brain tumor research.
