Team sports teaches character

Character has an important impact on young athletes and Legacy Sports Camp wants to teach these positive character traits in all of our programs.

As a coach of youth athletics, I have always thought my main goal is mentoring character development.

Participating in youth sports often starts out as a way to have fun and spend time with our friends and that is important, no doubt. But soon enough we find ourselves striving to become a better player at the sport we love. While we do that, hopefully someone teaches us valuable life lessons like hard work, respect for our opponents, trust, teamwork, focus and confidence. The types of lessons that as we move on play different roles in our lives such as parents, friends employees or bosses, we take with us.

One day, we all will go our separate ways, and while our ground ball fundamentals, our swing, and our throwing motion no longer apply, the fundamentals for building those skills remain the same.  What will always matter is what we learned and how it helped build who we are. And how to teach it to others as they come into our lives. It’s not the final score that counts, it’s character.
