Church of Beethoven turns 4 this month

Classical music series brings two special shows to Oak Park and Hinsdale

“A party without cake is really just a meeting” --Julia Child

Church of Beethoven in Oak Park celebrates four years of informal classical music in an intimate, friendly setting this month. We have produced dozens of wonderful performances featuring classical music, a poetry interlude and two minutes of silence.

As a concept, Church of Beethoven was started in Albuquerque in 2008 by Oak Park native Felix Wurman at the Filling Station, a re-purposed gas station on Route 66. Felix was a cellist in the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra.

Why a gas station on Sunday mornings? A change in presentation, Felix believed, could give audiences from all walks of life an intimate art experience and be a community catalyst around his beloved classical music.

Felix died of cancer in 2009, but word of Church of Beethoven got to his hometown of Oak Park, where local journalist and Jean Lotus and record emporium owner Val Camilletti contacted his family and started a Church of Beethoven here.

The group got the word out with posters and a live performance by “Fredwig Van Brandstrater” playing the piano in two Oak Park Independence Day parades.

Soon, Church of Beethoven-Oak Park began performances in the gorgeous new space at Open Door Theater, a partnership that has continued and grown.
