Hatch Soundcheck 2012

Some of the most amazing world
musicians in the Chicago area are gathering in one of the most architecturally
astounding spaces in the country as part of a benefit concert for Hatch
Elementary .    Hatch PTO proudly
presents:  Hatch Soundcheck 2012 on
Saturday March 3, 2012 featuring Bloco Maximo, The Neva Ensemble, Mind Over
Mirrors, and members of Hatch’s own Conga Club.

Bloco Maximo is a 12-piece Brazilian percussion ensemble that is sure to
keep an audience of both dancers and listeners captivated.  Formed in July, 2011, this new Chicago-based
group calls together musicians from all over the city and brings the hot sounds
of Brazilian batucada from the Pelourinho and the Sambodromo.  Bloco Maximo features traditional Brazilian
drums including timbal, repique, surdo, caixa & tamborim in a funky and
energetic dose of wall-to-wall rhythm that you don't want to miss.  Bloco Maximo has been featured at notable
events such The Old Town School of Folk Music (World Music Wednesday Series,
Folk and Roots Festival), and Chicago's Brazilian Carnival 2012, in addition to
many other performances at distinguished venues all over the Chicago area.  And we are proud to announce that Bloco
Maximo features Hatch’s own music teacher Mr. Jacobson!

The Neva
Ensemble will either introduce concert goers to Turkish folk music, or remind
them of the rich, warm tones and layers of the sounds and textures this music
has to offer.  Turkey not only finds
itself geographically at the crossroads of Europe, musically speaking, it has
blended cultures amazingly well too.  In
Turkish folk music one can hear influences from the Middle East, Asia, and
Europe, making for an interesting combination of instruments and musical
styles.  Come and enjoy the styles and
sounds of some of the finest Turkish musicians in the Chicago area in the Neva
Ensemble.

Mind Over Mirrors will be featured at
Soundcheck 2012 as well.  This is one act
not to be missed; it’s as unique as is the space in which it is featured.  The performance at Unity Temple will feature
a new duo version of Mind Over Mirrors, with Fennelly and percussionist Mike
Weis, who is known for his ability to incorporate West African polyrhythmic
drumming, as well as Korean Pungmul drumming alongside his foundation of traditional
“rock” percussion patterns as a solo artist, and with such esteemed underground
luminaries as Scott Tuma and his highly respected Chicago outfit Zelienople.

Mind Over
Mirrors is the solitary reeling of American harmoniumist/electronicist JaimeFennelly.
