Soundless Poetry: Chinese Painting at The Nineteenth Century Charitable Association

On Monday, April 2, the Nineteenth Century Charitable Association presents "Soundless Poetry: Chinese Painting." According to art historian Jeffrey Nigro, it is typical to distinguish between two main traditions of painting in China: the more colorful, detailed style of the professional painter, and the freer and more austere style practiced as an avocation by aristocratic and scholarly amateurs. Nigro's slide lecture will illustrate the complex relationship between these two traditions, their development and ideals. A discussion of some of the major masterpieces of Chinese painting will be included. The program ($10 suggested donation) will start at 1:15 PM and will be followed by a tea.
