Holmes Students Earn Top Award for Reading Olympics

District 97 students capture the grand prize during the Reading Olympics for the first time since 2013.

On Monday, April 27, 2015, students from District 97’s eight elementary schools participated in the Reading Olympics Extreme Round at the Oak Park Public Library with their peers from Roosevelt Middle School, St. Luke Parish School, Grace Lutheran School, St. Giles School and Ascension School. The event was organized by the library and teacher librarians from each of the schools.

For the first time since 2013, District 97 captured the Reading Olympics “Torch” grand prize. This honor was earned by Mira Arvind, Alani Espinosa and Caelyn Peppler from Holmes Elementary School.

Reading Olympics is an extracurricular activity for fifth grade students who divide up into teams of three and read 18 books during the school year (nine in the fall and nine in the spring). The Extreme Round is an all-day event that features a competition based on material from these 18 books. Students from all 13 schools compete in a quiz round in the morning, then work together on higher order thinking projects in the afternoon.
