After Charlottesville, Oak Park Community Discussion Urges Activism

In the face of the Charlottesville tragedy, Oak Park is holding an event on Monday at 7 p.m. to promote discussion and encourage activism.

OAK PARK, IL — Saturday's deadly attack in Charlottesville sent ripples of pain, fear, and anger throughout the nation. The after effects have ignited activism in the diverse community of Oak Park, where community members are holding a public discourse Monday at 7 p.m. to confront the impact of events like Charlottesville and see how Oak Park can activate to make change.

The event will be held at 109 North Oak Park Avenue, in the Lively Athletic facility. According to a Facebook post, Lively Athletic donated its space for the event. The event post reminds community members that "this is not the time to be quite and shy away." Local activists Dema Ali and Pem Hessing organized the public discussion as an "urgent call to action." The statement continues to say that all community members are invited "to talk more about this subject not as white, brown or black, rather, as friends and big family. In a sad time like this we need each other."
