'I'm Going To Rape You:' Berwyn Detective Sues Deputy Chief
Detective Carmelita Terry filed a lawsuit accusing Berwyn Deputy Chief Joseph Drury of sexual harassment and threats.

BERWYN, IL — Berwyn Detective Carmelita Terry said she feared for her physical safety when Deputy Chief Joseph Drury allegedly "got within inches of [her]" and said something to the effect of "I can give you six orgasms," according to a complaint Terry filed with the Cook County Circuit Court on Nov. 9. The complaint alleges that Drury made "sexually-charged comments and questions to Terry at least several times a month, beginning in the fall of 2014."
The complaint, which was provided to Patch by Terry's attorneys, says Terry was "distressed, offended, and embarrassed" by these alleged comments, which Terry says "created an intimidating, hostile, and offensive work environment for [her] as a woman."
According to information in the complaint, the alleged harassment continued through September 2015 when Drury allegedly called Terry into his office and told her "I'm going to rape you." The complaint states that Drury also made "lewd gestures towards his genitals while remarking about how he could 'satisfy' Terry."

In October 2015, the complaint alleges, Drury asked Terry to conduct a Law Enforcement Agency Data System (LEADS) report on a victim who had filed a police report. The complaint alleges that "Drury wanted to provide the alleged victim's LEADS and Criminal History report to the victim's alleged perpetrator," something Terry felt was unlawful.
Terry "refused to carry out Drury's order." The complaint alleges that Drury then said, "If you're afraid of the f***ing federal law then you don't need to work at the police department." Terry felt that the order and Drury's reaction were "an effort to set her up for reprimand or termination in retaliation for rejecting his sexual advances," the complaint says.

The complaint states that Terry then reported the incident to her direct supervisor, Frank Cimaglia and to Division Commander Giordano Manfredini, who advised Terry to report the matter to Chief James Ritz and City of Berwyn Attorney Anthony Bertuca.
Terry did so on Oct. 9, 2015. By March 9, 2016, six months later, the lawsuit alleges that Terry had not gotten a response from the city of Berwyn and filed the case with the Illinois Department of Human Rights.
According to the lawsuit, Drury admitted his behavior and apologized to Terry, saying, "I'm a man. God made me the way I am."
Terry's sexual harassment lawsuit names Joseph Drury and the City of Berwyn and requests more than $30,ooo in damages along with asking that the City of Berwyn be required to "implement effective steps to eliminate sexual harassment and retaliation."
Attorneys for Joseph Drury and the City of Berwyn did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday.
