You always hear statements like that, but, this week, I got to witness it.
I was walking with two of my co-workers into the building in the morning, when one of them went down to the ground and collapsed in mid-sentence. We quickly rushed into the building and asked that they call 911. While we waited, we tried to see if she was alright. She was unresponsive but breathing initially. Then, she quit breathing...
a good samaritan stopped and administered CPR while the security guard in the building came out with a defibrillator. After two carefully administer shocks, we brought her back around.
When the paramedics arrived, we were fortunate to find her medical history and a list of doctors in her address book in her bag -- what a lifesaver that was since none of us knew her medical history and she couldn't speak for herself.

The story has a good ending - she is home recovering!!
That event really brought home how fragile life can be. It also taught me some valuable lessons - I went home that night and put together a paper copy of my medical history and emergency numbers - this is the form I used:

I also vowed to sign up for CPR classes next time they are offered.
