This is one of the points made in an article this week in The Atlantic entitled "The U.S. Economy Does Not Value Caregivers". It talks about an America that has become out of balance, placing more focus on self-interest, competing and winning than caring. It talks about an America that is more focused on building a social structure that enables these qualities while devaluing caring.
By focusing on self-interest and competition, we view those who are less capable as less worthy, and, in effect discriminate against anyone or anything that shows weakness, illness or need. The paradigm shift back to center would recognize the equal and complimentary values of caring and competition, and, that when you care about individuals you empower them to be the best they can be, and, that compliments competition. Caring and competition can co-exist and in fact can both enhance the other.
