Oak Park Police Issue Tips To Avoid Being Crime Victim

Police say 90% of crime in Oak Park is committed on property, but warn residents to stay vigilant at all times.

OAK PARK, IL — Oak Park Police warn that residents should stay vigilant at all times to help deter thieves and robbers. In a recent release, the police department said that 90% of all crimes in Oak Park target property. Incidents of crime often increase during the holidays, but police say these tips can help you stay safe.

  • If you see a suspicious person or activity, call 911.
  • Avoid walking alone after dark.
  • Tell friends where you're going and when you expect to get there so they can inform police if they don't hear from you and question your safety.
  • Avoid walking or driving in alleys; stick to areas that are well-lit.
  • Watch out for bushes, alleyways, doors, and other potential hiding places.
  • Walk confidently, directly, and at a steady pace, and don’t stop to talk to strangers. Instead, walk on the sidewalk and stay close to the curb.
  • Turn down mp3 players and phones so you can stay alert and easily hear someone approaching.
  • Call 911 if you see a suspicious vehicle or people in the alley when you're parking in a garage.
  • Stay vigilant if you're in a parked car. If you someone approaches your car, drive away immediately.
  • Trust your gut.
  • If you're the victim of a robbery, don't resist and try to remember as many details of the suspect as possible.
