South African string virtuosos present works of Beethoven and more Sept. 17 in Oak Park

Church of Beethoven-Oak Park welcomes Jacques Pierre Malan (cello) and Francois Henkins (violin) for family-friendly concert

Church of Beethoven-Oak Park will present South African natives Jacques Pierre Malan (cello) and Francois Henkins (violin) performing works of Beethoven, Kodaly, Gliere and some surprises at a concert hosted by Open Door Theater. The Sunday morning performance takes place Sept. 17 at 10:30 a.m. at 902 S. Ridgeland Ave. in Oak Park. Tickets are $10.

Jacques-Pierre Malan from South Africa is a professional cellist performing in the United States. He is a winner and prize winner of several music competitions in his home country and in the United States and received his Masters of Music degree from the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore.

Having grown up in a highly musical family, violinist Francois Henkins distinguished himself at an early age by winning national chamber music and solo competitions in his native South Africa, and performing as guest soloist with the Johannesburg and Free State Symphonies. He came to the USA with a full scholarship to the Interlochen Arts Academy, and continued his studies under Chicago Symphony Orchestra concertmaster Robert Chen, Los Angeles Philharmonic associate concertmaster Nathan Cole, and Renata Artman Knific. Started in Oak Park in 2011, Church of Beethoven-Oak Park presents Sunday morning classical music performances in an intimate and casual setting as well as poetry by local poets and two minutes of silence. The family-friendly concerts are designed to bring classical music to an intimate audience in a casual setting. Record store owner Val Camilletti is mistress of ceremonies in a refreshing Sunday morning event with free coffee and cookies. Admission is $10.
