The Flying Squirrel is Going to the Olympics

Ellis Coleman, a 2009 graduate of , will compete in this summer's 2012 Olympic games in London.

Coleman, 20, bested wrestler Joe Betterman in the U.S. Olympic Trials, held when in Iowa City over the weekend, to earn a spot on the Olympic squad. In case you're wondering, he didn't use the Flying Squirrel move became a viral video hit last summer.

The Daily Iowan has a match recap and an analysis of Coleman's gut-check move, which he used to beat Betterman, who at one time was one of Coleman's coaches. That's important to note, because Coleman wants fans to know he's much more than a wrestler with a novelty move.

"People are like, `Oh, you're the Flying Squirrel. You're just a kid who just hits a flip and is a YouTube sensation," Coleman told the Associated Press after his qualifying match in Iowa City. "Now they're like,`Oh you're the Flying Squirrel. But there's more to it than just that move.' There's a little bit more grit, a little bit more technique, a little bit more agility and just more versatile human being back there. I like to have that back it up."

Coleman will join Jake Herbert, Jared Frayer, Tervel Dlagnev, Ben Proviso and Sam Hazewinkel on the team, according to the AP. The Olympic Games are scheduled to kick off July 27.
