Willard Elementary Students Learn From Team Building

Willard Elementary School students in River Forest got a taste of what many of their parents may experience in the corporate world as they participated in team building activities on September 6.

The Willard PTO sponsored a Team Building Program for students in grades 1-4 to help launch community building across classrooms. "With our emphasis on educating the whole child and the importance of social-emotional learning, this type of experience greatly enhanced our ability to introduce learning in this area," noted Willard Principal Merryl Brownlow.

Students participated in team challenges that emphasized cooperation, active listening and teamwork. "They worked together in unique ways that offered them the opportunity to problem solve together," said third grade teacher Katy Kennedy. "Students felt more bonded after the event."

The activities were facilitated by Windy City Fieldhouse, a team building organization. Students were engaged in activities that required them to work as a group to successfully complete them, and learned the importance of involving the community in working together.
