169,000 Pounds of Recalled Beef May Be Sitting in Cook County Restaurant Freezers

Look for "Iowa Best Beef" on packages of frozen beef cheeks.

A Chicago company is recalling tens of thousands of pounds of beef cheek products on suspicion they are contaminated with E. coli, a nasty bacteria that could cause bloody diarrhea, cramps and vomiting. The state is concerned the beef is stored in freezers at restaurants and stores.

El Cubano Wholesale Meats is recalling 169,620 pounds of beef cheek meat distributed to restaurants and stores in Chicago, according to a statement from the Illinois Department of Agriculture.

The products included in the recall have the number “EST. 4653a” inside the USDA mark of inspection and establishment name “Iowa Best Beef,” according to the statement.

A routine inspection led IDA officials to discover the possible contamination, according to the statement.
