Tesla Driver Claimed He Had Seizure Before Multi-Car Crash That Killed Pedestrian: Orland PD Accident Report

ORLAND PARK, IL — The driver who plowed into several cars during a crash that killed a pedestrian near Orland Square Mall last month told police at the scene that he'd suffered an epileptic seizure, according to an Orland Park Police accident report obtained by Patch via Freedom of Information Act request.

According to the report, the man—who witnesses said was driving at a high rate of speed—hit three other cars, sending one off the road where it struck and killed Antoni Luczynski, 66, of Palos Hills.

Patch is not releasing the Tesla driver's name, pending any potential charges or outcome of the investigation.

The multi-car crash happened at 149th and LaGrange Road just before 11 a.m. on June 29. According to the report, all four cars involved in the crash were headed northbound on LaGrange Road when the Tesla hit several cars in its path. The vehicle first hit the rear passenger side of a Lexus, then continued on to rear-end a Ford Fusion and Volkswagen Jetta, the report outlines.

The force of the impact to the Ford Fusion sent it off the road, where it hit Luczynski before also striking a Pace bus stop pole and a crosswalk signal pole, according to the accident report.

Paramedics rendered life-saving procedures to Luczynski, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Surveillance footage from the area captured the accident, showing the Tesla driving "significantly faster than the flow of traffic," according to the report.

The Tesla driver told police he believed he had suffered an epileptic seizure and did not recall the events leading up to the crash. He said he regained consciousness after the crash, according to the accident report.

Three other people sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate and were treated on scene before being taken to area hospitals, Orland Fire Protection District officials said.

Citations were issued to several involved in the crash, but citing an ongoing investigation, Orland Park police declined to provide specifics.
