Classic Comedy Under the Stars

Silver Lake Country Club hosts movie, barbecue, contests, beer tastings, ice cream, and more!

What better place to watch the 1980 comedy, “Caddyshack,” than in a golf cart at dusk on a scenic course just minutes from your home. Sounds ideal, right?

The setting couldn’t be more ideal to relive the classic lines made famous by characters we've come to know and love played by Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield, Ted Knight, Bill Murray, Michael O’Keefe, and others, on an outdoor giant inflatable screen at Silver Lake Country Club, 14700 S. 82nd Ave. in Orland Park

Set for Friday, July 27, the “Drive-In Movie Golf Cart” night at Silver Lake, which opened in 1927, also includes a barbecue, golf contests, equipment demonstrations, ice cream, beer tastings, and a Caddyshack” costume contest.

The movie is free and people can bring blankets and lawn chairs for watching the show. There’s also the option to purchase a golf cart for $25, which includes the movie, meals and contest tickets for both people in the cart. Golf carts are available for purchase on the course’s website. Those who do not choose the cart option can purchase meal and contest tickets, if so desired.

"Doors” open--figuratively speaking--at 4 p.m. At 4:30 p.m., representatives from Callaway, Cobra and Wilson will be on hand to give patrons a chance to test drive new clubs and golf balls. From 5 to 7:30 p.m., event-goers can enjoy a barbecue, contest to hit the gopher for a prize, a hole-in-one contest, the Major Series of Putting, beer tastings, photo booth, Plush Horse ice cream, and a “Caddyshack” costume contest. The movie will begin at approximately 8 p.m.—or as close to it as possible—and will end with a fireworks display.

Ellie Mack, who coordinates the event for Silver Lake, calls the “Drive-In Movie Golf Cart” a great event for the community. “It’s a night with loads of activities and fun. We truly have something for everyone and we love seeing the members of the community come out and enjoy a free movie on the golf course.”

The costume contest has been a big hit and Mack expects nothing less of the creativity from this year’s participants. “We have had some awesome costumes over the past two years of doing our movie night,” she said. “People can dress up as their favorite character from the movie for a chance to win a prize. We usually do two best-costume awards because people really bring their A-game for this.”

The evening ends with a bang. “Last year, the fireworks show was a surprise, but this year I’m sure people are expecting it. We coordinate the show with the big explosion when Carl Spackler (Bill Murray’s character) blows up the golf course in the movie.”
