As a candidate for mayor of Orland Park, I feel compelled to address a pressing issue that strikes at the heart of accountable governance and taxpayer stewardship in our community. Recently, it was reported that our village has spent over $275,000 on legal costs associated with fulfilling an order from the Illinois Attorney General. This order demanded that the village provide access to essential documents concerning its finances and other public records. This expenditure raises significant questions about how our village is being managed, particularly regarding transparency and the proper use of taxpayer funds.

The Context

The Attorney General’s determination is a testament to the rights of the public in accessing information about the operations and finances of their local government. However, rather than embracing this directive and working collaboratively to comply, the current administration has opted for a more adversarial approach, engaging the services of the law firm Klein, Thorpe, and Jenkins. In this process, we are not only paying exorbitant fees for legal services but also stifling the very transparency that should be a cornerstone of our government.

The Financial Impact

Spending over $275,000 simply to withhold information is an egregious misallocation of resources, particularly when one considers the myriad of ways these funds could have been better utilized. Here are some potential alternatives:

1. Improvement of Public Services: This amount could have funded significant enhancements to our public safety programs. Imagine investing in additional training for our police force. This would not only improve response times but also enhance the safety and security of our community.

2. Community Engagement Initiatives: Transparency should be paired with active community engagement. We could have used these funds to host community forums and educational initiatives aimed at involving residents in the decision-making processes that directly impact their lives.

3. Infrastructure Development: Our roads and public spaces are in need of repair and revitalization. . Over $275,000 could have been redirected to address potholes, improve sidewalks for pedestrian safety, or enhance parks and recreational facilities, leading to a more pleasant living environment for all.

4. Support for Local Businesses: Investing in economic development initiatives can help stimulate our local economy. The funds could have aided in creating grants orprograms that support small businesses, fostering growth and job creation.

5. Educational Programs: Partnering with local organizations to provide after-school programs or vocational training initiatives could equip our youth with necessary skills for the future, promoting education and community stability.

It is particularly disheartening to see this lack of transparency from the current administration, especially when the incumbent claims that transparency is a priority. Actions speak louder than words; if transparency were indeed a priority, we would see a commitment to open communication and an eagerness to comply with the Attorney General's directive rather than fighting it.
