Elderly Homeowner Encounters Masked Intruder In Orland Park Home Invasion: Cops

Orland Park police said a 68-year-old man was sprayed in face with an unknown substance during a home invasion Monday morning.

ORLAND PARK, IL — Orland Park police are investigating a possible home invasion that occurred Monday morning. A 68-year-old man reported that he was home alone when a lone masked suspect entered his house through an open garage door. Police said the alleged intruder sprayed the man in the face with an unknown substance.

Around 9:52 a.m., police responded to a report of a home invasion that had just occurred in the 9400 block of Boardwalk Lane. The man told police he was home by himself when he encountered the stranger in his home. The suspect immediately confronted the man by spraying him in the face with an unknown substance similar to pepper spray. Police said the suspect was also said to be armed with an unknown type of handgun.

After disabling the elderly man, the suspect went about searching the home for valuables, police said. The suspect was inside the home for about 10 minutes. Police said the suspect left the house with a limited amount of jewelry. The elderly homeowner was able to reach a phone and called 911.

Orland Park police do not believe the suspect remained in the area, according to a news release. Officers from the Cook County Sheriff’s Office and Orland Hills searched the area as a precaution, with the aid of a police bloodhound and police helicopter.

Monday’s home invasion comes on the heels of similar incident in Tinley Park, where family members were locked in a basement as three men invaded their home.

"We have no evidence to support that the two crimes are connected at this time," said Commander Anthony Farrell of the Orland Park Police Department.

The purported home invader is described as a white male, thin build, between 5 feet 9 inches and 6 feet tall, wearing a mask similar to a ski mask. Anyone with information or who noticed something suspicious in the neighborhood around the time of the reported home invasion is asked to call Orland Park Police at (708) 349-4111.
