Joliet Man Charged With Attack on Orland Square Mall Kiosk Worker a Registered Sexual Predator

The Joliet man pleaded guilty to aggravated criminal sexual abuse and was sentenced to six years and nine months in prison.

A Joliet man charged with punching an Orland Square Mall kiosk worker in the face is a registered sexual predator who victimized a 14-year-old girl.

Darvel Alexander, 30, pleaded guilty in 2006 to charges of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and criminal sexual abuse. He was 20 at the time of the 2005 crime.

Alexander punched the mall worker when the 29-year-old man intervened in a domestic dispute between Alexander and his 20-year-old girlfriend, police said.

Alexander reportedly claimed that the kiosk worker would not get out of his way.

After the worker inserted himself into a private conversation, “Darvel told (him) that this was his girlfriend and they were only having an argument and to mind his own business,” Alexander reportedly explained to the police. Alexander went on to say that he “tried to step around (the man) and (he) moved in his path. Darvel said he warned him and felt he was justified to punch (him) in self-defense.”

Alexander’s girlfriend shot pepper spray into his face after he punched the mall worker, police said. This reportedly prompted Alexander to flee.

“In a panic, he took off and ran out of the mall,” a police report said.

Alexander was captured after a short foot chase on Ravinia Place, police said. He was arrested on charges of battery and domestic battery.

The Orland Park police said Alexander lives on Madison Street. The State police sex offender registry lists an address on Manico Court in Crest Hill.
