One Orland Party 'Day of Service' Honors Martin Luther King

One Orland Party candidates team with volunteers to helps seniors and others remove Christmas trees, wreaths, lights and debris outside.

The One Orland Party will team with community volunteers on Monday for a “Day of Service” focused on helping seniors and residents tidy up their outdoor holiday decorations or deal with snow while paying tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Crews will respond to work “outside only” at the homes of community members in need of assistance with:

· Snow removal

· General pick-up around the lot (fallen tree branches, leaves, etc.)

“The homeowners don’t need to worry about interacting with the volunteers,” said Dan McLaughlin, who will lead one of the crews. “We’ll bring our own equipment, trash bags and step ladders. We’ll also be masked up to keep everyone safe.

“This service day is not exclusive to seniors. We know some residents have been compromised during the pandemic and are still bouncing back to full health. In talking to some of my own neighbors, I know they value someone lending a hand from time to time.”

Residents or families of someone who may need assistance can call the One Orland Park office at 708-745-6037 or email team@oneorland.com to request help. Residents are asked to leave an address and a short description of what tasks are in need of attention; e.g.: pine tree recycling, lights taken down.

All are welcome to volunteer with the One Orland team and pay tribute to Dr. King. Volunteers will be required to wear masks to avoid unsafe conditions. Additional volunteers can call 708-745-6037 or email team@oneorland.com to join a crew for one hour or more.

One Orland Party considers Monday a “day on” instead of a “day off” and cites the rich tradition of working together to overcome differences and making the world a better place in Illinois, the first state in the union to honor Martin Luther King, Jr. with a holiday.

“Doctor King said it best: ‘Life’s most persistent and urgent questions is: What are you doing for others?’,” said McLaughlin. “Monday we will put action to his words.”

The One Orland Party announced its slate of candidates running in the April 2021 consolidated election for village trustees and village clerk last month.

Like McLaughlin, each of the candidates will head a service crew: Patrick O'Sullivan, Amy Burrell, Chris Kasmer and Derek Rinaldi.
