Orland Township Highway Department to offer Pumpkin Composting

Orland Park, IL – There is no trick about it! Pumpkins are a great fall tradition, but most of you might notice they do not last too long. After the trick-or-treating is over, you might find yourself wondering what to do with your jack-o-lantern.

You can bring your Great Pumpkin to the Highway Department of Orland Township. The Highway Department will have a compost bin available for residents beginning November 1. Residents can bring their pumpkins to be composted Monday through Friday between 7am & 4:30pm.

Pumpkins are good for composting because of their high nitrogen content. They breakdown quickly and provide lots of nutrients for the soil.

“I encourage residents to utilize this free service, bring their pumpkins to the Highway Department to be composted and save them from ending up in landfills,” said Highway Commissioner Antonio Rubino.

There is nothing spooky about this new service. Once the Highway Department’s Pumpkin bin is full, the bin will be transported to local farms to be composted.

The pumpkin compost bin is available from November 1 through November 30 at the Highway Department located at 16125 S. Wolf Road in Orland Park.
